Reposting this pic as the Twitter joke trial reached the High Court appeal today. It's utterly baffling to me that this nonsense has got this far without someone doing anything remotely sensible. If you have no idea why I made a cross stitch of a criminal and "clearly menacing" tweet, you can read more about this Orwellian nightmare  here and here.

And on a lighter note, here, have a stitched Star Trek coaster.

It's chaos and mayhem in casa Blaize at the moment, but the good kind - lots of redecorating and reorganizing, and in some cases just plain organizing of things that were never actually organized in the first place. And we have a new car, which facilitates lots of organizing but is also scary because I haven't driven in about eight years and need to relearn. But more importantly a car means a trip to Hobbycraft and buying supplies for the next few ridiculous craft projects, which is very exciting!

But until those crazy crafts are completed, have a post with some bags. These are a few of the pay it forward gifts I made last year, and there's some more stuff to come just as soon as I work through the backlog of unposted crafts!

As I transfer pictures and patterns and other random files to my shiny new computer I've discovered loads of stuff that I've made and not yet posted any pics of. So working through the backlog should keep me busy for a while, which is quite nice - I was worried I'd have nothing interesting to post until I'd finished any of the umpty-billion half completed and then abandoned craft projects I have cluttering up the place!

So to start out the year, here's the gift I sent for the [ profile] ontd_startrek secret santa.

And to keep up the Star Trek theme, I was asked if I would share my Star Fleet insignia cross stitch patterns, so if you want to stitch any of these...

I appear to have some sort of home delivery curse. We had a sofa take nearly 3 months to turn up. Food delivery folk need to call us for directions every time we order, because google maps doesn't know our street exists, most sat nav systems direct deliveries up the lane, which is only a means of access to our building on foot, and some ordinance survey maps have our street name spelt wrong (oddly, this never confuses postmen or courier services). And now the new laptop I have ordered isn't coming on the day it was meant to be delivered for a totally unknown reason because the message they left asked me to call them back on a phone number that is not actually a valid phone number. And no one else seems to have any record of my order. Aaaaargh.

So I'm falling back on my old coping mechanism - a random picspam of hot boys.

Hello, boys )

Yum. That made me feel much better.

After I made my own geekiest lamp in all of geekdom a friend of mine (the very friend who lent me his Enterprise D blueprints) commissioned me to make him a table lamp with an Enterprise design. Took me ages to find a lamp I could customise and then ages again to actually decide which bit of the ship to put on it, but I really like what I ended up with, so maybe all that time was worth it! Here's how it turned out:
anonymityblaize: (Default)
I may have made a few too many cross stitched Star Trek badges here. I didn't mean to fill a whole sheet of cross stitch fabric with them, but somehow I did. I'd just add another one every so often when I was between projects, and then somehow I ended up with twenty of them (these are just the ones that came out best!). A worrying number of my projects lately have felt somewhat involuntary. I am possessed by some strange spirit of craftiness. Weird.

Anyway, have some Star Trek insignia. They're all on 58mm (2 1/4") badges. And if anyone wants a pattern for any of these just ask!

Still not caught up on the interwebs and/or my own life yet, but I feel like I'm getting closer now. Just got to concentrate on getting one thing done at a time!

Yaay! Normal service should be resuming on my internets soon - apparently the phone line coming into our building was composed mainly of rust, so no wonder it's been acting like dial up for months. It wasn't fixed soon enough for me to join in the [ profile] ontd_startrek party post (boo!) but at least I can go back later and mine it for awesome gifs. Yaay!

And appropriately enough today's crafty post is (yet another) Trekkie thingamabob. It's probably an idea that would have worked better on a red t-shirt, but I had a red beach bag and I wanted to do this, so to hell with logic!

Right, 2011 is officially a bastard. Onto other news...

Don't worry, I have not forgotten about making stuff for Pay It Forward 2011 - [ profile] sorrynotsorry and [ profile] dahliablueI will be in touch soon, I promise. My etsy shop seems to have a rhythm of nothing-for-ages and then umpty-million-things-at-once and I clearly need to learn better time management skills!

Which reminds me - has [ profile] ontd_startrek stopped doing Make it Sew posts? Cos I haven't seen one in ages and I've made loads of Trekkie things lately which I really feel like showing off.

Meant to make a post of reactions to things I have seen lately, but as per bloody usual I don't really have the time, so here, have the quick versions:

Fast & Furious 5 - Fast cars, check. Inappropriate sexual tension, check. Fantastic stunts, check. Vin Diesel's sexy voice being all growly and sexy, check. Vin Diesel punching people, check. The Rock punching people, check. 'Splosions, check. Heist-y banter, check. Actual physics of the world totally not adhered to, check. So basically, if you like this franchise, this'll be your favourite one. Also, stay for the credits for a "we totally know we're making a sixth one" scene which gave me much happiness.

Thor - Made me giggle like a loon for most of its running time. Unexpected [character's name redacted for spoilers] was unexpected, but also awesome. Hewsworth was fantastic and hella hot. Idris Elba was ridic badass (and also sporting a sexy growly voice. I seem to have a thing.) And again, stay right to the very end of the credits for a little Avengers tease. I am excite.

Doctor Who - Dear Steven Moffat, please stop trying to break my brain. Love, Me.

Community - Baby episode was fabulous, but my dear deities, the "clip show" episode was quite possibly the most glorious thing an American sitcom has ever produced. I though I was actually going to hyperventilate at one point I was laughing so hard.

Firstly, my thoughts go out to everyone affected by the earthquakes and tsunami in Japan and the Pacific basin. I hope that all my flisties in the region, and all your loved ones, are safe and sound. I haven't seen a fandom auction and/or help resource go up yet but I'm sure there will be something soon. Right now the only helpful links I can think to post are Google's People Finder and the Red Cross Blog.

ETA: That link is for the UK arm of the Red Cross, try the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies site.

Son of ETA: Fandom is awesome - hie thee hence to [ profile] help_japan

This sentence is an abrupt-change-of-tone buffer.

So, today's crafty post. I had this floor lamp that I loved very much, but some of the panels had been damaged over the years, so I decided to cut all the panels out, replace the ones that were too badly ripped and salvage the ones that weren't. Maybe I'd add some small embellishments, I thought. Then it turned into an epic stencil project that took up all my crafts-for-me time throughout January and February. And then I discovered that it's really hard to take pictures of an item that is itself a source of light. Especially since when the lamp is off (or I tried to use the camera flash) you can't actually see any of the designs - it just looks like panels of plain paper. So this post has taken quite a while to get organised!

Because it's for me, it's a bit messy in places and I tried some techniques that I won't try again. But I actually quite like how it turned out, overall. I'm definitely going to try to use some of these ideas again for smaller table lamps I can sell, but that'll require quite a lot of research and planning!

The biggest problem I had with taking photos was the difference between the Bat signal panels and the other ones. With the naked eye there isn't as big a contrast as there are in these pics.

It's a good thing I don't make actual New Year's Resolutions otherwise I'd be feeling pretty bad about that whole "I'm going to post more in 2011" thing...

I may use this journal as an outlet for moaning about why the real world is mean and isn't letting me play on the internet enough at some point soon, but for now I am being a happy bunny because I got my [ profile] ontd_startrek Secret Santa present from [ profile] carma_bee at the weekend and it is awesome and made me much cheerier.

A plushy Adipose! Isn't he just the cutest thing? When I've got my work space reorganized I'm going to sit him on top of my computer monitor with my Spock monkey I got from last year's Secret Santa. I love Trek fandom. Y'all are amazeballs.

And here's the gift that I made:

In unrelated business, I've started posting the etsy treasuries I get featured in over on my blogger blog as I can't use script type widgets on LJ (or at least I haven't worked out how to yet). I'll link to them every so often so go have a look at some more awesome geeker crafts by me and by other people here!

And finally, it is awesome that NBC sell a Troy and Abed in the Morning mug. It is awesome that it only costs $12. It is unawesome that it would cost $24 to ship to the UK. I really don't think I can justify spending $36 on one mug. Boooo. (BTW the short version of my reaction to the latest Community episode involves a lot of high pitched squealing, hearts in my eyes and me hugging my telly because it was just that awesome.)
anonymityblaize: (Default)
I got featured in a few more treasuries on Etsy over Christmas and New Year and I thought I should share two of them with you. So much amazing stuff there - I keep having to remind myself that I'm there to sell stuff, not to buy!

So, there's a Mario treasury here:

Hello, December. You always sneak up on me - are you a ninja?

There is too much good telly in the world. When did that happen? How did that happen? There are two unwatched episodes of Chuck sitting on my sky+ box, which is insane. I love Chuck! But there are so many good things that need watching just now. I genuinely think that when I fall in love with a new tv show I am undergoing the exact same chemical reaction as actually falling in love. It's such a rush.

I'm probably not helping myself by rewatching Community right now, but it's just so addictive and it makes me so happy.

And last week's episode of Misfits BLEW. MY. MIND. If you are not watching it, then get on that right away. Damn. I kinda want to post spoilery stuff but I shall refrain for now 'cos I think only a few people on my flist watch. For shame. But have an unspoilery gif anyway.

Oh, Iwan. So adorbs.

I am cold. But I am still stunned at the way Britain just falls apart when it snows. The media act like it's some sort of unheard of occurrence every single time. Madness. But it is very pretty outside. Scaffolding looks a lot less ugly with a dusting of snow and icicles hanging off it.

On the underground the other day I witnessed a part of some stranger's snow related rant. But I wish I knew the whole story.

Have finally made some progress with the cafe press shops. (Has anyone else ever sold stuff through cafe press? Is it just me or is their system a little wonky? Or just convoluted. I keep clicking links and ending up somewhere totally different from where I expected to be.)

For some reason I don't really understand, I have some sort of post-craft-project-completion ennui. It all feels very anti-climactic to have finished my Serenity cross stitch, and I got a bit down after posting it. I am weird.

So, here's my default antidote for feeling like I have nothing to add to the internet but yet more moaning: an absolutely random pic spam of hot people who make me smile.

Random hot people being hot... )

Please share some stuff in the comments that makes you happy  -  pictures, gifs, vids, whatever!

Random post is random and has bullet points.

· My Serenity cross stitch is FINISHED! Hallelujah. Shall have it all prettified and posted tomorrow probably. Such a weight off my shoulders. (Although I am, of course, now bereft of things to do with my hands and am plotting my next project.)

· Screen printing attempt number one was an absolute disaster of monstrous proportions. But I'm trying again. Fingers crossed. In the meantime, however, I'm getting stuff organised to put some of my dictionary definition t-shirts on cafepress at some point this week.

· After Friday's post, I wanted to add some more linkspam on the #twitterjoketrial - Charlie Brooker does what he does best (that'd be misanthropic hyperbole and reductio ad absurdum in the face of idiocy), and here's an idea of how the whole thing could have been avoided (bonus points for random Gary Oldman as the Police).

· New Take That album is out and I love it so. Has a very Scissor Sisters meets Muse vibe about it, which I heartily approve of. SOS and Kidz seem to be my favourite tracks so far. I think it'll make for a fantastic tour. Roll on June!

· Oh sweet baby Jesus waiting for a palfrey: This Means War is going to knock me over with hottness. I have a terrible weakness for pretty boys getting beat up on screen. Yum.
· And finally, a t-shirt I didn't want to post until it had been gifted:

Edited umpteen million times because the LJ cut hates me.

The real world continues to give me grief. This week's crafting experiments have been unmitigated disasters. (T-shirt transfer paper didn't work so well and t-shirt transfer paste is of the devil.) I am now moving on to trying screen printing, which for some reason I am very scared of. (I think it's because all the instructions are so convoluted. I'm sure it'll be like poker - when you explain the rules of poker to someone it sounds like gibberish, but if you just play and explain as you go it all starts to make sense.)

But I am not moaning today. No siree.

Today the internet decided to be full of awesomesauce so that I would not be filled with despair.

Tom Hardy and Chris Pine Together At Last )

Chris Pine - are you trying to kill me dead from hotness?

Because you might succeed )

Martin Freeman is Bilbo Baggins. Richard Armitage is Thorin Oakenshield. Aidan Turner is Kili. Am I allowed to get excited now? Is this film really going to happen?

Also, Buffy cast doing awkward family photos. The one of Nic Brendon staring unfocusedly into the distance will never be unfunny.

And finally. Best. Gif. Ever. )

The evil of last week managed to invade Monday and Tuesday of this week too, but finally I am free and things are looking up. I am determined to stay positive and work my way through my truly random to do list as best I can. (It includes such diverse entries as "make definition of frak t-shirt" but also "clean kitchen walls". Good times.)

One item on my to do list that I did manage to get done earlier this week was to sign up for the [ profile] ontd_startrek annual Secret Santa. Last year I got an amazing Spock Monkey (who sits above my computer monitor to this day) so I'm pretty excited about it. My brain's already buzzing with ideas about what I'm going to make, but I'll try to make myself wait til I know who I'm a Santa for before going too crazy!

And I got featured in another treasury over at etsy, which cheered me no end. My Marv t-shirt is in rather nice company - I particularly like the Ctrl Alt Del cushions and the SNES controller soap. If they're still available in a few weeks I think I may know how I'm starting my Christmas shopping. Click the pic to head over to etsy and check out these fine people's work!

This idea has definitively obsessed my brain! It even has its own tag and its own Flickr set now. That's a little bit odd.

But, this is quite possibly my favourite thing I've done in ages. It's probably quite daft, but it actually made me laugh out loud when I thought of it. It took forever and I'm never doing it like this again (next week I'm hoping to find time to try out four different methods of making these), but I really, really love it.

And see, Trek fandom! I have not abandoned you at all, despite Inception fandom wanting ALL OF MY BRAINSPACE!

Teasery teaser today, for I'm rather proud of this.
