Firstly, my thoughts go out to everyone affected by the earthquakes and tsunami in Japan and the Pacific basin. I hope that all my flisties in the region, and all your loved ones, are safe and sound. I haven't seen a fandom auction and/or help resource go up yet but I'm sure there will be something soon. Right now the only helpful links I can think to post are Google's People Finder and the Red Cross Blog.

ETA: That link is for the UK arm of the Red Cross, try the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies site.

Son of ETA: Fandom is awesome - hie thee hence to [livejournal.com profile] help_japan

This sentence is an abrupt-change-of-tone buffer.

So, today's crafty post. I had this floor lamp that I loved very much, but some of the panels had been damaged over the years, so I decided to cut all the panels out, replace the ones that were too badly ripped and salvage the ones that weren't. Maybe I'd add some small embellishments, I thought. Then it turned into an epic stencil project that took up all my crafts-for-me time throughout January and February. And then I discovered that it's really hard to take pictures of an item that is itself a source of light. Especially since when the lamp is off (or I tried to use the camera flash) you can't actually see any of the designs - it just looks like panels of plain paper. So this post has taken quite a while to get organised!

Because it's for me, it's a bit messy in places and I tried some techniques that I won't try again. But I actually quite like how it turned out, overall. I'm definitely going to try to use some of these ideas again for smaller table lamps I can sell, but that'll require quite a lot of research and planning!

The biggest problem I had with taking photos was the difference between the Bat signal panels and the other ones. With the naked eye there isn't as big a contrast as there are in these pics.

Some of the panels are paper stencils, and some of them are drawn on the back with a Sharpie. The paper cut outs definitely look best for the blockier designs, but I couldn't even imagine trying to cut out something like the Gallifreyan symbols.

These close ups show the Bat signal panels a little more how they actually look than in the pics of the whole lamp.

The Millennium Falcon took for-bloody-ever to do but I finally like how it came out.

I didn't mean to do three Doctor Who panels but I got a bit carried away!

I'm not entirely happy with how the Tardis turned out. The lettering isn't neat enough and you can see my pen strokes in the supposedly block colour areas. But I think I could do that better if I tried it again.

tardis b

This panel is of the gates of Xanadu, from Citizen Kane. I am spectacularly obsessed with that movie.

This is meant to be a pair of dragon wings, but I think it just ends up looking like a bunch of squiggles. Oh well. I'm not gonna moan about any of the other panels from here on out!

dragon wing b

I quite like how the Viper turned out, but that Cylon raider looks pretty fantastic if I do say so myself!

viper and cylon raider b

Another one I kinda wish I'd done as a paper stencil rather than drawn, but hey, I have a Monty Python panel on my lamp of awesome so all is well!

An attempt to use a printed paper stencil to give various shades of gray. Didn't work out exactly as planned but I do like how it looks.

scythe b

The Metallicar is another one that took a long time to complete, but I absolutely love how it turned out.

metallicar b

I wanted one of the panels to represent The Wire and the first thing that jumped to my mind was Kima's "and then he dropped the bracelets" so I had to do handcuffs. If it wasn't for the last panel I think this one would be my favourite.

bracelets b

You're getting three pics of this one because I absolutely adore how it looks. A friend lent me his Enterprise D blueprints (which, by the way, is one of the nerdiest awesomest things ever) and so I simplified a section of the top of the saucer bit thing. (I really ought to know what the technical term for that section is given the amount of time I've spent poring over those blueprints!) At some point soon I'm definitely going to make a whole lamp composed of bits of those blueprints. Probably highlights like the bridge and Picard's quarters and stuff like that.

OMG, that lamp is blowing my mind! That is so awesome. I would totally buy something like that, though I don't know how difficult shipping would be.

So did you hand draw all the stencils from scratch or did you work from some sort of template? If you make them yourself, do you ever sell custom made stencils for those of us unable to draw realistic art like this? Fandomy stencils would be so awesome to have. I'd stencil everything in sight! ;)

Aww, thank you! I have the idea that somewhere there exists some sort of table lamp that's flat-packable which'd make shipping easier, but the only one I've found so far is so tiny that it limits what designs I could put on it. I'm going to keep hunting though - there seem to be a lot of lighting wholesalers in the world!

The stencils are a bit of both really. For example the scythe is just a print out of my photoshop fiddling about, and the Enterprise blueprints are essentially just traced, but the Kane mansion gates were done freehand from staring at a freeze frame. This whole lamp's a mishmash of techniques! I'd never thought about making and selling stencils themselves - I'll have to look into that. Thanks for the idea!

This is beautiful. Geeks are chic! Did you do the dalek yourself? I'd like to borrow it and modify it to use on a pumpkin in the fall. I already have a TARDIS and a 10th doctor in my foam pumpkin collection.

Thanks! The dalek one I actually modified from something I found on google images - I think I was just searching dalek + stencil. Pumpkin designs sound so hard to do, what with every piece needing something to connect to, but I;d love to see that!

This is one of the coolest things EVER! Quick question: I know you said the contrast between the Batman panels and the others wasn't as prominent as it appears to be in the pictures, however there is a noticeable difference. So I was wondering, is this an aesthetic choice for you and if so why? *I'm very curious about silly things*

Date: 2011-03-16 05:35 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] anonymityblaize.livejournal.com
Thanks!

The intention was to do four of the Batman panels, one for each side of the lamp, but I got distracted by other ideas and only ended up with three. I always knew the sugar paper panels were going to look different from the reclaimed original ones so I figured a deliberate contrast would look better. But then I tried the Buffy's scythe one on another weight of paper and it actually looks almost exactly the same as the original panels so that whole train of thought kinda ended up going nowhere! So, basically there was supposed to be a deliberate aesthetic choice and then my experimenting got away from me!
