A while ago I started experimenting with two-tone stencils for t-shirt designs. I made a Flight of the Conchords tee, and then made an Enterprise one. So when I embarked upon a t-shirt with the Enterprise D on it, I figured it was time for another tutorial post, since the bleached-out t-shirt design tutorial went down quite well.

I'm going to do this in two parts - this post is about turning an image into the stencil, then the second part will be about putting that design onto a t-shirt.

So, let's find out how I made this:

(See, Star Trek fandom, I haven't entirely abandoned you for Inception!)

Lots of images behind the cut )

A few recently(ish) completed custom orders. Some BSG nerdiness, some more phaser pants, and some wings on sleeves.

I am currently an organizational disaster zone. While there are many reasons for this, I am mostly blaming Inception fandom. Yes, still.

So, here's some things wot I made.

Both of these are going up in my shop later this week (yes, I know I said that last week and still haven't listed everything, but I really am determined to get sorted this week!). Please feel free to tell me to shut up about things I'm selling if it starts getting annoying!

ETA : Live Long and Prosper T-shirt now listed here, and the Doctor Who bag is here.

Got featured in my very first treasury over at Etsy. It's exciting!

Go check it out here and have a good browse - there are so many amazing geeky crafts going on over at Etsy right now.

And while we're at it, I'd also like to reccomend that you check out Ory B's amazing Red Shirt mini Munnys.

Sold a pair of the phaser pants last week, and they turned out much nicer than my own ones. Quick Pic! )

Will I ever tire of putting Star Trek related stuff on clothing? It doesn't seem so.

It's surprisingly complicated to scan your hand. Took forever in photoshop to make it look half decent, but I really like how the whole thing turned out in the end. And I totally cheated and made the size difference between my pinkie and my ring finger less freaky (my hands look like someone stole the little fingers of a much smaller person and just stuck 'em on the edge.)

After my first foray into two-tone stencils I decided to try something a little more complicated. Which then turned out to be a great deal more complicated. I never learn, apparently.

I decided I needed a t-shirt with the Enterprise sweeping majestically across it, as you do. The first hurdle came when I discovered that photoshop won't print a large image over multiple pages without a fight. (Thank goodness I'm related to a graphic designer.) Once that was dealt with this, of course, resulted in a very large and very delicate stencil, which, of course, the cat wanted to attack. So once I had rescued the stencil from furry, clawy doom it would all be plain sailing, right? Wrong. Grey fabric paint seems to be an endangered species, so I had to mix that colour myself. And matching the second stencil up proved to be quite annoying. (To the extent that it became a stencil made of five separate, overlapping pieces.) And I hurt my arm by holding it too tense to try and get perfect lines. And... And.. I'll stop moaning now.

In the end, as ever, it turned out really quite pretty. It would seem that I have some sort of ridiculous need to hate a project whilst actually doing it, in order for it to turn out well. I'm not sure that's a good thing. But my Enterprise t-shirt is beautiful and I love her! So nyeh.

click for more pics! )Many more photos here (I went even more snap-happy than usual with this one!)

If anyone would like me to do a tutorial on this sort of thing (like I did for "bleached-out" t-shirt designs) please let me know and I'd be happy to oblige!

I have a terrible tendency to pick up a few extra t-shirts that grab my fancy whenever I'm getting something for a custom order. So a couple of weeks ago I rounded up all the random shirts piling up around my craft room and decided to come up with something simple but cool to actually use them for.

And thus this happened:

Twenty-three (!!) individual photos under the cut.

As always, there are more photos at my Flickr album here. And since I'm being particularly shameless today I'll point out that most of these t-shirts will be available to buy from my etsy shop here. Custom orders are always appreciated - if you want something uniquely geeky to you, I'm happy to make it!

D'oh! Oh well, tomorrow is another day and perhaps all my picture uploading issues will magically fix themselves.

To be going on with however I have a thing of magnificence to share. My [livejournal.com profile] ontd_startrek Secret Santa present is a GQMFing Spock Monkey, made by [livejournal.com profile] hurricanine , and it is a thing of beauty. Thank you so much.

Pics of my Spock Monkey and the present that I sent await after the cut... )

As may be quite obvious, I have been quite obsessed with making Star Trek crafts of late. At some point I will wean myself onto other fandoms and obsessions. In fact, pretty soon I will be asking for the wisdom of my internet friends to help me decide what the next cross stitch of head-melting-ly biggness will be.

But for now I present to you some nu-Trek uniforms that I would totally wear as a Halloween costume if I were doing the dressing up thing this year. But I'm not. So goodness only knows why I made them. Hopefully someone will want them!

Some more (quite large) pics behind the cut )

And you can see even more pics here.

Exactly 16,752 stitches, approximately 66 metres of thread, and four months have gone into this 42cm by 20cm piece of loveliness.

It's very pleasing to have finished a project and actually still like it. Goodness only knows what craziness I'll put myself through next. But for now at least I know that I like this ship. It's exciting!

I have just 15 stitches and some backstitching to do on my Enterprise cross stitch, so I won't post a pic until it's done. Promise not to take as long to post that as I did with the Magnificent Flying Petrelli! Very, very excited for it to be complete. And then I'll have to work out what the next giant-ass project that will melt my brain will be...

And I finally chose a Star Trek icon! Woohoo! (Well, not so much chose as "narrowed it down to 2 and then said, screw it, I'll use both.")
anonymityblaize: (serenity)
Whilst trying to not let my cross stitch Enterprise drive me insane, I've been letting myself be distracted by making some more t-shirts. But the lure of Star Trek managed to get in there too.

I'll post some of the other new stuff later (followers of my Flickr stream or Facebook page will have already seen them) but for now here's a Next Generation type uniform t-shirt and my very own GQMF top.

Nearly there... Oh so nearly there....

Brain melty...

eyes squigly....

I clearly am not good at the end game of large cross stitch projects. Will attempt to borrow a better camera for pictures when it's finished as these just aren't coming out well at all. Both nacelles are done though, so I should focus on the happy that is that.

anonymityblaize: (staff meeting)
Why do things become automatically cuter when they're made for small people? It's a mystery to me. But a cute one!

anonymityblaize: (smirking coach)
I used to have a bit of a love/hate relationship with this old blogging malarkey, but now I'm getting to quite enjoy it. Mostly because every time I start to post an Enterprise update I feel like I haven't done much of late, but then I check my last post on the subject and see just how much more is filled in. It's quite encouraging. But I still think the last few weeks of any large project is my achilles' heel. The beginning is just so much more fun. Shapes appearing as if from nowhere seems so much more satisfying than filling in the details. However, I am allowing myself to add dark colours now and I've made my feelings on pale colours pretty plain by now (I know, why on earth would I think an almost entirely pale design wouldn't drive me mad? I am a fool to myself, that's why.).

Excitingness of the week comes courtesy of having completely completed the port nacelle. I took out all the guidelines there since I don't need them anymore and I'm rather pleased with how it looks.

Picture time!

anonymityblaize: (Default)
I appear to have lost some of the momentum I had previously with this project, but there's not that much further to go now. I trundle on. I may even allow myself to do some dark colours soon and I always like them much better than the pale bastards.

Oh dear. I appear to be anthropomorphizing individual stitches in a craft project again. That might not be a good sign...

Have been on quite the T-shirt making binge of late. Pictures of Star Trek, Star Wars, Buffy, Batman and Doctor Who inspired craftyness await you after the cut.

Wheee! You can actually tell there's more than one colour in there now. Just barely, but still, it's exciting enough for me.

She's looking real purty. I am a happy stitcher right now.

Still plenty of stitching to go though!

anonymityblaize: (serenity)
I cannot believe that a pun that terrible had not occurred to me yet. It's Dad-joke levels of awful/awesome. Awfsome?

And so we encounter the nacelles part of the experience. You can see the width of them now, but not the length - it still has quite a ways back to go! (I swear nuTrek Enterprise has longer nacelles than the old one but I haven't investigated this properly yet.)

Having done this much I must downgrade my estimated time til completion. It's going way faster than I had thought and I could even be finished by September at this rate, although I'll bet on October for now just in case it all goes horribly awry.
